bleaching

Smoking, drinking too much tea or coffee or eating highly colored foods can cause deposits on your teeth. These are the extrinsic discolorations, discoloration from the outside. There are toothpastes on the market that can help remove deposits, but they cannot change the color of the teeth.

How do yellow teeth develop?

The color of your teeth, just like the color of your hair and eyes, is determined by your DNA. As we age, the dentin changes color and teeth become yellower. Dentin is the soft dentin that sits under the enamel and protects the nerve of your tooth. These discolorations happen from within and are the intrinsic discolorations. The intrinsic discoloration cannot be removed with an anti-tartar/tartar toothpaste.

Bleaching under the supervision of a healthcare professional

The oral care provider can whiten your teeth using a whitening gel. Whitening gel treatment is easy, safe and virtually painless. It is important that you carry out this treatment under the supervision of a dental care provider. Avoid purchasing universal whitening kits from random outlets or over the Internet.

Home whitening method

Whitening at home using a whitening tray has proven to be a very reliable and safe way to whiten teeth.

In our practice we work with the ABC-Masterkit bleaching method from CAVEX BITE & WHITE. With this method, a bleaching spoon is custom made for you. After a professional dental cleaning and an extensive explanation of the product, you can easily whiten and protect your teeth at home in 3 steps. The active ingredient in the whitening gel is carbamyde peroxide and is available from your dentist together with the custom-made whitening tray.

Sensitivity

Toothache or sore gums may develop during the whitening process. The Cavex Bite & White ABC method contains a conditioner that largely prevents or treats sensitivity. The oral care professional will tell you about this during the treatment.

Bleaching from the inside (walking bleach), how does that work?

After a root canal treatment, the dead tooth can be bleached from the inside. A paste with a bleaching agent is applied to the tooth, after which the tooth is closed with a temporary filling. The tooth will become lighter in the following days. Depending on the result, the treatment will be repeated several times. Finally, the tooth is closed with a permanent filling. Since this requires a root canal treatment, it is not recommended for living teeth.

Bleaching Result

The result can be surprising and have a very nice effect on the tooth color. Fillings proved difficult to handle, but can often be transferred and adjusted after bleaching. After a number of years, the teeth will return to their original color. Smoking and drinking a lot of coffee or tea speeds this up. Re-bleaching can then lead to a new result. The result can also be tracked by bleaching once a month. The result may depend on the cause of the discoloration. With an antibiotic (tetracycline) discoloration, for example, the result is less predictable.

General information about whitening

Over the years, your teeth will absorb dyes, of course this depends on how many discolouring products, such as cigarettes, coffee, tea, red wine you consume. These are called external discolorations. As a result, with age, the teeth will darken.

In some cases, the teeth are already discolored when they break due to medication and/or developmental disorders. These are called intrinsic discolorations. In the past this was sometimes solved by making crowns, nowadays bleaching can offer a great solution.

Bleaching has been successfully used for many years now for discolored teeth. There are different systems for bleaching. Most systems are provided through the dentist, but you can also purchase some systems from the store or through the TV itself. Because these products often use lower concentrations, the effectiveness is less and it is often better to whiten under the supervision of the dentist, so that the development of the teeth and gums is kept under control.

This is what you do after bleaching

Just whiten your teeth? Do not drink coffee, tea or wine for 24 hours after bleaching. It is also better to avoid smoking. The advice is to drink only water for 4 hours after bleaching. Why should you watch what you eat or drink in the first 24 hours after whitening? This is because the bleach makes the tooth enamel somewhat porous. This allows dyes to penetrate the glaze more easily.

This would of course be a shame because these dyes affect the whitening result, so that your teeth are not as white as you would like. So be careful.

Why are the teeth not white immediately after whitening?

You may not like the result after bleaching. Don't worry, this is completely normal. Your tooth enamel dries out somewhat due to the whitening gel, causing the white color to diminish. It can take one to two weeks before you see the final result.
