FAQ

It is wise to have your mouth checked regularly by the dentist. In this way (starting) problems can be recognized in time. After all, prevention is always better than cure. It is recommended to make an appointment in the practice every 6 to 12 months for a check-up. Even if you wear dentures, it is important to continue to visit the dentist. The dentist not only checks your teeth, but also checks whether there are any abnormalities in, for example, your tongue, lips or (cheek) mucous membranes.

The dentist examines the mouth with a mirror and a probe (the 'bracket'). This allows the dentist to only see the outside of the teeth and gums. Caries (cavity) often occurs between the molars or under an existing filling. These spots are difficult to examine with naked eyes. To detect caries early, it is recommended to have x-rays (bitewings) every two to three years, often during a periodic check-up. X-rays are also taken to check whether a root canal treatment is going well or has been successful, and whether there is inflammation in the jawbone. X-rays are taken in children to see whether all the teeth – which have yet to erupt in children – are present.

Everyone is exposed to background radiation from, for example, the earth and the universe on a daily basis. A minimal amount of radiation is used when taking X-rays at the dentist. This minimizes the risk of adverse health effects. For example, the amount of radiation can be compared with the amount of radiation you incur during a 14-day winter sports holiday. Of course, with radiation, no matter how small, the usefulness of the X-ray must always be weighed against the risks of radiation. There is then a chance that an inflammation or other dental abnormality will not be detected or will be detected too late.

The color of your teeth, just like the color of your hair and eyes, is genetically determined by your DNA. As we age, the dentin (the soft dentin that lies beneath the enamel) changes color. The dentin becomes yellower and shimmers through the enamel layer. This form of discoloration occurs from the inside out and can only be treated by bleaching the teeth or providing the teeth with a filling layer (composite veneer) or porcelain shield (porcelain veneer). In addition, teeth and molars can become discolored due to smoking and regular intake of dye-containing drinks (including coffee, tea, wine). The build-up of tartar can also discolor the teeth. This form of tooth discoloration can be treated fairly easily by means of a thorough dental cleaning by the prevention assistant.

Scientific research has shown that electric toothbrushes are more effective than a manual toothbrush. The electric brush makes faster and different brush movements and therefore cleans the teeth better in the same time than a manual toothbrush. During brushing, an average of 100 grams more pressure is exerted on a manual toothbrush than on an electric toothbrush. An electric toothbrush helps to prevent damage to the gums.

40% of your tooth surface is between your teeth. You cannot reach that with your toothbrush. To remove the plaque, it is recommended to floss, brush or stoke after brushing. In this way you keep your gums healthy and you reduce the risk of developing caries (tooth decay).

If there is tooth decay (caries) in a tooth or if your molar breaks, your dentist can restore it with a filling, which is almost always a white composite filling. The dentist can treat you himself, or refer you to a dental hygienist for small new cavities. A filling ensures that you can chew properly again and prevents further (pain) complaints. If tooth decay is quite extensive, i.e. is close to the nerve of the tooth, the tooth may be somewhat sensitive after filling. This should pass after four to six weeks. If the symptoms do not subside or the sensitivity gets worse, contact your dentist. If the filling is deep, a root canal treatment may (still) be required.

Your tooth or molar can become inflamed due to tooth decay, a leaking filling or, for example, a fracture. Sensitivity to hot and cold, a swollen cheek or severe toothache can be signs of inflammation. It is also possible that you have no complaints (yet). Your dentist will then find out when taking a check-up photo. In such cases, a root canal treatment needed.

It is important that your child visits the dentist on time. Not only does this promote healthy dental development, but it also reduces anxiety later in life. That is why we recommend that you take your child for a check-up from the moment the first tooth has broken out, before the second birthday. You can take your child to your own six-monthly check-up. This way your child sees that you are also lying in the chair and that nothing unpleasant is happening.

It is recommended to have a check-up on children at least every 6 months. This is because eating habits, brushing behavior and dental development in children can change quickly. This need not be a financial barrier for anyone: the basic insurance reimburses dental costs (with the exception of crowns, bridges and braces treatment) for all children and young people up to the age of 17.

The costs of the dentist are fully reimbursed for children up to the age of 18, with the exception of crowns, bridges, braces and implants. For adults, only dentures and click dentures (a 'fixed' denture) are included in the basic insurance. Therefore, consider taking out additional insurance for dental care. Read the policy conditions carefully.

Most dental treatments are reimbursed from the supplementary dental insurance, usually for 75% to 100% up to a maximum insured amount per year. This differs per insurance company and per package. If you are unsure, it is best to check with your health insurer.

Payments

The dental bill is made up of the various services that have taken place during a treatment. Each performance is described with a code on the invoice. A rate is linked to each code, which may differ per dental practice. Look at here your invoice highlighted!

From the age of 18, most reimbursements for dentistry are covered by supplementary insurance. You can read what your insurer reimburses in the policy conditions of your health insurance.
